What is Newsworthy Brent

     Timing - 4/4
This is a news story that has been in the public view since October 13, 2017. It is the latest rescue mission to happen in which there are firefighters and civilians trying to get to there loved ones, and to try and save some of their personal belongings. I gave it a 4/4 on timing because it is an update on the California wildfires.
     Significance - 4/4
I gave it a 4/4 on significance because of the number of people killed, and homes destroyed. At least 35 people have been killed and over 5000 homes and businesses have been destroyed. It has not only grabbed the attention of the people of California but also has been seen by many over the world.
     Proximity - 3/4
The geographical proximity is not close to a Canadian reader, but Canadians can connect to this story as we have had our share of fires that have almost turned disastrous. It is a story that connects to Canadian history, and it is a story we hope has an ending that turns in a positive way.
     Prominence - 3/4
The story has prominence because of the number of people killed and the unique rescue attempts that are being made. I gave it a lower mark because few know who these people are in the world. Even now their names were not mentioned anywhere.
     Human Interest - 3/4
This story appeals greatly to emotion as people hope and pray that the fire outbreak calms down and no more deaths occurs
Total Mark- 17/20

     Timing 2/4
This news story happened on April 26, 2015.  On Saturday, a 33-year-old man died after falling five stories in a rappelling event in downtown Montreal. I gave it a 2/4 because this is an old article and this accident happened two years ago.
     Significance 2/4
I gave it a 2/4 on significance because this incident happened in Montreal. Montreal is very close to New Brunswick. It is about eight and a half hours from here.
     Proximity - 3/4
This happened relativity close to New Brunswick, but I do not think the incident was big enough for people to know about it world wide, so that is why I gave it a 3/4.
     Prominence - 3/4
This story has prominence, but not enough to get a higher mark. why? because few people know about what happened and also that not a lot of people know who this guy was.
     Human Interest - 4/4
This story appeals greatly to emotion as people hope and pray that nothing like this happens ever again and that people will always be safe when doing a rappelling event.

Final Newsworthy Mark - 15/20

Brent Starting With The Bacics

Last Thursday, Gregory Lenehan, A Haxifax judge acquitted another cab driver of sexual assault. The provincial judge said that Houssen Milad, The sex assulter can walk free... Vice News reported that although Lenehan believed the complainant was sexually assaulted last summer (2016).  The Crown failed miserably to prove that Milad was responsible. ." Lenehan has a long ongoing history of sex assault and acquittal cases. In March, the first of which involved a woman so intoxicated that she was passed out in the back of his cab. However, despite her having a blood alcohol level between 220 and 250 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood (roughly two to three times the legal driving limit). Lenehan proclaimed that the victim had consented in this situation. But was it true? His decision reads that a person will be incapable of giving consent if she is unconscious or is so intoxicated by alcohol as to be incapable of understanding or perceiving the situation that presents. This doesnt  mean that an intoxicated person cannot give consent to sexual activity. obviously a drunk can consent for their own safety.
Vice's story about this is gripping giving the reader enough information to know what happened without going in to too much detail if you ask me, but it is good to know more than you want to know than to not know enough. I think this is an article that everyone should take into consideration to read because things like sexual assault should be very punishing and shouldnt happen!

On Sept 22 2017, Ontario Is allready fighting on Dispensary owners for legal weed. Clint Younge was tormented by bullies as a boy in elementary school Because of his ADHD in Stoney Creek, Ontario, long, long before he discovered the power of cannabis.around the same time he turned 20, he was struggling with mental health issues and post-traumatic stress disorder linked to his childhood, so he started researching cannabis and began using it as a treatment. He found the substance more effective than any prescription drug he tried.“It saved my life,” said Younge, who’s now 35 and is the CEO of MMJ Canada, a cannabis dispensary chain from B.C. Tyler James works in community outreach and strategy for Eden, another B.C. dispensary chain that opened shops in Ontario around the same time as MMJ. Toronto police have raided them multiple times in recent months, but James said it doesn’t do much to deter them. He said they serve around 15,000 customers a year at their Ontario locations.James put his arguments forward this week at the Toronto licensing and standards committee hearings, a municipal regulator, on legal cannabis. He said his company has launched a concerted effort to lobby the provincial Liberals, as well as the opposition parties. The ministry was “not able” to provide figures on the number of dispensaries in the province or how much the industry is worth.
“Though more consultations are required to set the price of cannabis in Ontario, we will be guided by our focus of keeping these illegal pot shops closed,” Rudyk said.

Journal Entry #1 Brent

Compared to today, newspapers are very diffrent than they use to be. Not as many people even read the newspaper because of social media. If anyone wants to find out the news these days, they just go online. Back then there was no computers and everyone had to read the newspaper.

Publick Occurrences was forced to shut down because they were critical of the government. Do you think the government should have that kind of control or power today?  I dont think that the govornment should be allowed to do this. I think that because the government is overpowered today and 100 years ago they wernt as concerned about everything.

Publishing today: I think that many newspapers are critical to the govornment because someone could put a article in the newspaper that the govornment doesnt want viral.

Newspapers In Canada: I wasnt suprized that Halifax was the first place to have a newspaper because there is lots of papermills around eastern canada and halifax is a popular city as well. But i figured it would of been in toronto or a big capital city out west because they had more money out there to actually make newspapers.
